It was less LaFaro's virtuosity that made a difference in the role of the bass than the uncanny group thinking and interaction he made possible in the Bill Evans Trio. LaFaro was what Evans had been looking for, dreaming of, a bassist who thought about music, and specifically about time, as the pianist did. There is an invaluable pre-LaFaro Evans album with his friend Don Elliott, the multi-instrumentalist. The CD consists of informal rehearsals at Elliott's house in 1956 and '57. I reviewed it for JazzTimes eight years ago. Here is the applicable section of the review.

In a snippet of conversation at the end of their workout on the changes of "Doxy" (misidentified in the booklet as "Blues #2"), Evans talks about his ideal of group interaction.

Evans: "I like to blow free like that, with no 'four' going, but you know where you're at. It's crazy. If everybody could do that, if the bass could be playing that way --why not-- drums could just..." (he vocalizes in imitation of a drummer playing free).

Elliott: "That's right; doesn't have to help you."

Evans: "Not if everybody feels it, man."

It would be 1959 before Evans put bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian together in a group in which everybody felt his way of playing time. They went on to reform the very idea of the jazz trio, but this glimpse into his thinking tells us that Evans was ready years earlier.

LaFaro may have felt ready when Evans was expressing his vision to Elliott, but he was on the west coast, a 21-year-old still developing. There is precious little of him on record from his Los Angeles days. Two recordings, one with Victor Feldman, the other with Cal Tjader and Stan Getz, provide strong indications of his growing musicality and technical prowess.

There is even less of early LaFaro on film or tape, to my knowledge only two pieces, both from Bobby Troup's Stars of Jazz television program. LaFaro was in tenor saxophonist Richie Kamuca's formidable quintet with Feldman on piano, trombonist Frank Rosolino and drummer Stan Levey. Here are both of those clips, "Cherry" and "Chart of my Heart." The video quality is dreadful and there are audio dropouts, but this is our only option for seeing Scott LaFaro in action. If your speakers have tone controls, turn up the bass setting and you'll find it easier to follow his lines.

There is no video of the Evans trio with LaFaro and Motian. Their primary recorded legacy is in Portrait in Jazz, Explorations and Sunday at the Village Vanguard. The CD titled Waltz for Debby was compiled from the Vanguard date. This is its title tune, decorated with a photo montage courtesy of whoever posted it on YouTube.

That was June 25, 1961. Twelve days later, Scott LaFaro died at the wheel of his automobile when it crashed in upstate New York. He was 25 years old.
billevanstrio1.jpgIt would be inaccurate, but not grossly inaccurate, to say that no jazz bassist who emerged from the 1960s onrward developed free of debt to LaFaro. To the extent that Evans, LaFaro and Motian changed the concept of the piano trio--and that is a considerable extent--LaFaro's influence extends much further than the bass.

I ordered a copy of the official Sonny Rollins calendar as a Christmas present for a friend, the biggest Sonny Rollins fan I know. I've attended Rollins' concerts with my friend in places ranging from Austin, Texas, to Chicago. My pal's also flown to Paris a couple of times to see the great saxophonist.

So I'm sure he'll love the calendar, which features photos by my online friend Juan-Carlos Hernández.

If you count a Sonny Rollins fanatic among your friends or loved ones, you should consider buying a copy of the calendar, too. It wouldn't be a bad Christmas treat for yourself, either.

http://squeezemylemon.blogspot.com/2009/11/good-blues-name.html A Good Blues Name http://squeezemylemon.blogspot.com/2009/11/good-blues-name.html
Here's Ivory Joe Hunter with one of his most popular tunes, Since I met you Baby.

Another approach is to have a name that specifically refers to something else altogether. For instance, Muddy Waters refers to the Mississippi and he's from Mississippi so his name embodies all that history. Howlin Wolf refers to Chester Burnett's vocal style. Of course, it's possible to introduce a little humour too. For instance, a guitar player named Eddy Harrington started calling himself Eddy Clearwater, obviously a different kind of player than Muddy Waters, right? I like Eddy Clearwater's music. I've attended a number of his shows, including a couple in a club he ran for a while in Chicago's Wicker Park area. Eddy also has another nickname. He's known as The Chief. Just to make sure you remember he's The Chief he occasionally wears an Indian head-dress on-stage.
Here's an interview with Mr. Clearwater.

And here he is, doing his thing...

Finally, let's look at a name that is just plain stolen. First there was John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson, and what a great harp player he was.
Here's Bluebird Blues

Then, years later along came another remarkable harmonica player named Aleck Ford, who was also known as Aleck Miller or Rice Miller. He changed his name to Sonny Boy Williamson, maybe to capitalize on the success of his predecessor. In spite of this strange name business, the second Sonny Boy developed a very distinctive style. He was a great player, maybe my favourite harmonica player.

Falling into the thug life, their paths diverge: one becomes a street criminal, the other an undercover cop. But their lives would continue to intertwine. This was a very well done collaboration, both Bruen and co-writer Reed Farrell Coleman take one character and tell their story. Both men have a strong, economical writing style that brings their characters stories into a bright light. Bruen seems to really enjoy thest types of collaborations, he also co-writes a series of novels for Hard Case Crime with Jason Starr. Nothing fancy here, just a solid hard hitting crime novel - it is written without pretense and doesn't overstay its welcome.

Unseen Academicals by Terry Pratchett After Terry Pratchett's startling revelation that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, fans have been wondering what would become of his epic creation, the epic series of Discworld fantasy novels. Well, we needn't have worried, the latest installment is one of the funniest yet. The city of Ankh-Morpork has gone mad for the sport of Foot-the-Ball, a mix of soccer and street theater that often leaves players and spectators alike bloody or in some cases dead. Lord Vetanari, the benevolent tyrant of the city, decrees that this much change, and charges the wizards of Unseen University with taming the game and making it respectable. Culminating with a wildly funny winner take all march between the wizards and a gang of street toughs and hooligans, the story also tells a fine tale of understanding and redemption. Mr. Nutt, an orc no less, is smuggled into the city in an attempt to save this race and integrate them into the great melting pot of Ankh-Morpork. So slapstick comedy and puns with a touch of class is the order of the day, and this makes for one of the best Discworld tales in quite a while.

http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_3.html Listen To The Bass Player: Part 5, Red Mitchell http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_3.html In the first paragraph of Part 3 of this series, it was not by random choice that I included Red Mitchell's name in the short list of important bassists who emerged in the 1940s. He discovered ways of playing the instrument that made a difference in the bass's role in jazz. Bill Crow, the hero of part 3, has kindly agreed to expand on some of the reasons for Mitchell's importance.

In between the Blanton (and Pettiford) soloing styles that were so influential in the 1940s and 50s and the new age that was marked by Scott LaFaro's playing, was Red Mitchell. Red was the first bassist I heard who used a lower action, pressed rather than pulled the strings and used some left-handed plucking articulation. It cut his in-person volume down a lot, but was phenomenal on recordings. And his solo lines were melodic, horn-like, and very original. He opened up the ears of a lot of us to other possibilities of the instrument. I think he may have given Scotty some ideas. And this was all pre-amplification. When Red finally started using pickups, the result was beautifully audible soloing at the highest level.

Bill Crow

In the early 1980s, Mitchell worked frequently in a duo with Bill Mays. In their performance of a Thelonious Monk piece, he demonstrates what Bill Crow emphasizes about his peer's skill and originality.

It's like a summit meeting at a Hell's Angels convention between the Allman Brothers, the Rolling Stones and Tower of Power.

Some longtime Lucero fans don't like the horns, which are new to Lucero on this album. That's silly. Those horns turn slower tunes such as "Goodbye Again" and "Darken My Door" into twangy soul manifestos. Lucero is, after all, from Memphis, the home of Stax Records.

"1372 Overton Park" is a terrific album. Here's all the evidence you need:

http://jazzandblues.blogspot.com/2009/11/rem-live-at-olympia-warner-bros-2009.html R.E.M. - Live at the Olympia (Warner Bros., 2009) http://jazzandblues.blogspot.com/2009/11/rem-live-at-olympia-warner-bros-2009.html At first blush, this might appear to be a quickie live album from a veteran band, keeping the fans happy with a little product while they figure out what to do next. But digging a little deeper yields an interesting story. Their output in the 2000's was seen as a series of diminishing returns. So in preparation for their latest studio album, Accelerate, they did five concerts to preview the material and work out the kinks. Having fresh material which was at a very high level and a chip on their shoulder to prove that they were still relevant made for some excellent live performances captured here on a two-cd set. The band sounds more raw and feisty than they had in quite some time, blasting out some of the highlights that would anchor the then forthcoming LP "Living Well's the Best Revenge," "Horse to Water" and "I'm Gonna DJ." Longtime R.E.M. fans will no doubt be excited about the material from their lengthy career that is interspersed amongst the new songs. Long loved songs like "So. Central Rain" and "Disturbance at the Heron House" get dusted off and taken for a spin. There is no radical remaking of the music from their familiar studio versions, but the music is played with such a robust energy that they are revelatory in their own right. Far from a band that was playing out the string, these performances and the ensuing Accelerate LP shows that R.E.M. are not going to go quietly.

http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_2.html Listen To The Bass Player: Part 4, Paul Chambers http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_2.html For the new segment of our adventure in letting bassists be our guides, author, critic and sometime Rifftides commentator Larry Kart has a fine idea.

May I suggest, for Part 4, Paul Chambers behind Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Cobb on "So What." Like Heath and LaFaro in their various ways, where Chambers puts "one" is a place where no one who's playing with him literally is, but it's a place that all can touch and play off of. I think that's a fairly basic (no play on words intended) general principle.

Good suggestion. The performance is from a 1959 episode of The Robert Herridge Theater on CBS-TV. Herridge introduces the program and the piece. Gil Evans leads the orchestra, whose function in this clip is to set the mood for "So What."

Green never quite became a household name, but the songs on "The Very Best of Garland Green" illustrate that he could have, should have.

I suppose it's appropriate that I picked up my copy of the Kent Records release in Chicago, the soul singer's longtime base. Like the Windy City, Green's tunes are a melting pot of styles and influences.

Three songs recorded in 1968 at the beginning of Green's career hint at that versatility. He dances through "It Rained Forty Days and Nights," a bouncily seductive tune that sounds a lot like some of fellow Chicagoan Jerry Butler's tunes of the era. He slinks through "You Played on a Player," which, inexplicably, didn't become a hit. And he takes a sexy jaunt through "Ain't That Good Enough," which might be the best song on the collection.

"Plain and Simple Girl," produced by Syl Johnson and arranged by Donny Hathaway, is a soul burner of the first order. "Sending My Best Wishes, recorded in 1974," blends Tempations-type riffs with a disco beat and fiery vocals. And "Nothing Can Take Your Love From Me," recorded in 1975, is a blues tune that matches the intensity of many of the other blues recordings being recorded in Chicago at the time.

Apparently, Green's still performing. I'd love to catch his act.

It all started with Adolphe Sax, a Belgian instrument inventor. In 1842, he attached a clarinet mouthpiece to a brass creation that he named the saxophone. Because of its metal, conical body, the saxophone was capable of playing at volumes much higher than other woodwinds. It was used in military bands in the 1800s, but it took a while for it to be taken seriously by musicians.

Here is a brief history of jazz saxophonists, structured around the stories of the musicians who changed an odd invention into one of the most iconic instruments in jazz. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a rough sketch of the involvement of the saxophone in jazz.

http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_1.html Listen To The Bass Player: Part 3, Bill Crow http://www.artsjournal.com/rifftides/2009/11/listen_to_the_bass_player_part_1.html As you may recall from parts 1 and 2, our theme in this series is that by concentrating on the lines played by a good string bassist, you can gain an understanding of the shape and structure of a piece of music, feel its heartbeat, sense its soul. Duke Ellington's Jimmy Blanton in the early 1940s opened the possibilities of the bass as an improvising instrument in modern jazz. Oscar Pettiford followed, then Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Red Mitchell (this is a limited and selective list) and Scott LaFaro.

From the early 1960s, in great part due to LaFaro's influence, bassists went beyond the instrument's traditional basic function in jazz of supplying swing and harmonic guidance. In many cases for better, in others for worse, virtuosity to the point of acrobatics became a part of standard bass operating procedure.

Bill Crow '56.jpgA consistently satisfying bassist from the pre-gymnastics era of the instrument, still at work, is Bill Crow. A trumpeter, then a drummer, then a valve trombonist, Crow became a bassist in 1950. A very few of the leaders he has worked with are Stan Getz, Claude Thornhill, Terry Gibbs, Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer, Al Cohn, Lee Konitz, Marian McPartland and Eddie Condon. I'm showing you a picture of Bill because in the clip that follows, you will get only a glimpse of him behind the front line of the Gerry Mulligan Sextet.

This was Rome in 1956, the same year the picture was taken. The other players are Mulligan, baritone saxophone; Bob Brookmeyer, valve trombone; Zoot Sims, tenor saxophone; Jon Eardley, trumpet; and Dave Bailey drums. The piece is Mulligan's "Walkin' Shoes." The absence of a piano means that the bass is crucial to the harmonic life of the tune. The listener can let it be his guide without a redundancy of chords from a piano. You may notice that the members of the big band in the background are paying rapt attention. No wonder.

http://stljazznotes.blogspot.com/2009/11/jazz-this-week-nicholas-payton-stanley.html Jazz this week: Nicholas Payton, Stanley Jordan, Kahil El'Zabar, Salty Dogs Jazz Band, and more http://stljazznotes.blogspot.com/2009/11/jazz-this-week-nicholas-payton-stanley.html It's a busy weekend for jazz in St. Louis, with shows coming up from four touring ensembles in styles ranging from modern to traditional, plus plenty of activity from our local contingent of musicians. Let's go straight to the highlights:

Tonight, guitarist Stanley Jordan opens a four-night engagement that continues through Saturday at Jazz at the Bistro. Jordan is no stranger to St. Louis audiences, having performed here in recent years at Finale Music and Dining, but if you'd like to see and hear some samples of his playing, check out the video post from last Saturday here.

On Thursday, saxophonist Willie Akins and his group will perform a free concert for the Jazz at Holmes series at Washington University. That same evening, KWMU DJ and and jazz historian Dennis Owsley will begin his three-week class on "The Great Jazz Soloists" at the Ethical Society.

On Friday and Saturday, Chicago-based percussionist Kahil El'Zabar and his Ritual Trio return to take the stage Robbie's House of Jazz.

On Saturday, New Orleans-born trumpeter Nicholas Payton (pictured) performs at the Sheldon Concert Hall, with piano phenom Taylor Eigsti as part of his band. You can see some videos of Payton in action here, read an interview with him here, and find information on how to get tickets for the show at half-price here.

On Sunday afternoon, the St. Louis Jazz Club welcomes the long-running Salty Dogs Jazz Band for a concert of traditional jazz at the Sheraton Westport Hotel. Then on Sunday evening, New Music Circle presents composer and producer Rob Voisey's 60 x 60 Project at Mad Art Gallery. The event will feature 60 one-minute performances from local dancers and choreographers set to 60 different pieces of music created by 60 different composers and curated by Voisey.

Looking beyond the weekend, on Tuesday morning the St. Louis Ragtimers will do the first of two "Coffee Concerts" at the Sheldon, with the program repeating on Wednesday morning. And on Tuesday night, Jazz St. Louis' CD Listening Club will meet at Borders in Brentwood, with singer Erin Bode and JSL executive director Gene Dobbs Bradford leading the discussion of the featured CD for the month, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman.
